Why one should monitor their progress?

Monitoring will help you lose weight. It will also help you learn about your achievement and your barriers. If you are not progressing the way you wanted to, you will learn why not. If you are progressing then you will get a sense of achievement which will motivate you.

Using the appropriate tools, and apps you will know if you are eating adequately (good protein and calories), reducing fat, and gaining muscle (more details on this is in my book).

There are a plenty of options for body fat testing including

  • Calipers
  • Bioelectrical Impedance Scales
  • DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry)
  • Hydrostatic Weighing

Of all the options, bioelectrical impedance scales are the most cost-effective and reliable option. You can easily buy one of those scales (also known as body composition scales) from many stores. This article explains why we should monitor body fat.

Body composition scales are a great tool to assess your progress honestly. Remember, your weight is just a measure of how the earth is pulling you down (force of gravity). It does not differentiate between muscle, fat, or water. You can lose weight by losing muscle and water (which is not the right kind of weight loss because it will have a minimal beneficial effect on health). You want to lose fat and not lose muscle and water (the best kind of weight loss) because this will have the most beneficial effect on health.

Wearable to assess activities

Wearable technology is one of the fastest-advancing sectors of the fitness technology industry, now outpacing smartphones’ development. These wearables are everywhere, ranging from basic fitness trackers and highly-advanced sports and smartwatches to virtual and augmented reality headsets.

In one of my survey studies to assess the effect of wearable on self-efficacy, we found that wearable fitness tracking device users have higher levels of self-efficacy for exercise than non-users across all participating ages, genders, and ethnicities. Self-efficacy is the belief in one’s ability to accomplish a task, such as an exercise. There are many types of wearable in existence. Here are a few of the most popular.

  4. Hearables. These are the fastest-emerging segment of the wearable market. As the name suggests, they are worn in the ear. These are an intelligent piece of device that understands when a call is coming. It will announce the caller and ask you if you want to take the call. It is connected to the voice assistant like Alexa, Google Home, or Siri for all your questions and needs. The most popular example is Apple’s AirPods. These are true wireless earphones that offer quick access to the Siri voice assistant. Other examples include Bose SoundSport Free, Amazon Echo Buds.
